The 2-D prerendered realistic backgrounds of Raccoon City were replaced by Silent Hill’s real-time 3-D environments. At the time, the technical and aesthetic progress was the first thing noticed. PlayStation Magazine stated on the cover of its issue of March 1999, SH1 was “more than just a Resident Evil Clone” (quoted in Davison 2001, 130). Given that Capcom’s big hit console series (1996) was introduced before Konami’s Silent Hill (1999), it was and still is the obligatory reference.
